Ross Cole has been working with stained glass about 14 years, off and on, including lamp design and repair, window pieces and other decorative forms of stained glass art.

It took 5 years of research and experimentation to create the processes required to successfully build these solids which are "closed three-dimensional stained glass hollow sculptures."

 

It is a totally new and unique art form revitalizing the classical Platonic and Archimedean Solids in the artistic medium of art glass.

In 2000, the 'engineering' left side of his brain and the creative right side collaborated when he became intrigued with creating three dimensional stained glass replications of the Platonic Solids and then on to the Archimedean Solids. "The forms take on a very unique art expression due the selection of a multitude of art glass types as well a colors," Ross says. "The variety of solder process selection and assembly defined variability make each sculpture an art creation in it's own right. No two are alike."

According to Ross, the challenges and artistic skill required to make these solids satisfactory to the artist are not dissimilar to the struggles a painter goes through in creating a painting. Both require continual revisions to achieve the desired results.

The next challenge is to demonstrate some of the duality relationships between the solids. Larger sculptures combining different solids together or development of asymmetrical figures will provide interesting challenges. Ross is quite interested in advancing stained glass artists into this three dimensional art form.
